Pollarding suits the right species in the right place: limes down a front path, willows along a stream, street trees in tight gardens. We work to the existing pollard points, or we set new ones on a young tree that needs containing.
For trees with established pollard points we cut back to the knuckles on a 3 to 5 year cycle.
On younger trees, the first pollard cuts at the right height to lock in a manageable size for the lifetime of the tree.
Limes, planes, willows and poplars where a regular pollard cycle keeps them contained and safe.
Everything chipped, mulch left on the bed if you want it, or taken off entirely.
No. Pollarding is a structured cycle of cuts at established or newly set pollard points. Topping is an indiscriminate chop across the top of a tree and damages its long-term health. We do not top trees.
Most species we work on are on a 3 to 5 year cycle. Willows can be annual, limes happily go 5 years. We will note a return date on your invoice.
No. Limes, willows, planes, mulberries, beech and some species of oak tolerate pollarding well. Conifers and most cherries do not. We will tell you on the quote visit.
For a few weeks, yes. Pollarded trees look stark immediately after the cut and beautiful again by midsummer.
